Useful Information

LINE UPS

There have been a number of occasions when it has not been possible to be completely certain as to positional line-ups. Views have been taken based on press listings, programmes both for the matches in question and in subsequent team summaries as well as personal recollections in some cases. Accordingly the line up shown may not always be in total agreement with what has been previously published.

Obviously this was very much the case in the seasons when the number 1-11 were dispensed with and squad numbers took over. Normally the official match team sheets were used as the source of this information but these were obviously of little use when players were listed in squad number order. This led to managers being consulted as to how they saw the team lining up on such occasions.

SUBSTITUTIONS

An element of judgment has had to be applied when simultaneous substitutions of two players have occurred both as to which player replaced which and the sequence of the substitutions. Wherever possible notes made at the time by persons present have been used.

ATTENDANCES

As regards quite a number of Southport’s matches both home and away there were variations in the quoted attendance figures depending on whether one took the figure from the club programmes or the press. Considerable pains were taken to establish which was the correct figure in each case, often involving contact with the secretaries or statisticians of the opposing sides. If in the end it was not possible to be certain which quoted figure was the correct one, a view had to be taken based on the reliability of the various contemporary sources. Where this was the case the figure shown has been marked with an obelus “ ? “ not only as a warning that the attendance might vary from previously published figures but also that it might yet be subject to future restatement if further evidence were to emerge.
