Paul Carden appoints son of Club Legend as No. 2

Paul Carden has appointed Alex Russell as his new Assistant Manager.

Crosby born Alex had an impressive 24 year playing career. Initially starting at Burscough in 1993, he went on to make over 100 appearances for Rochdale and Cambridge and also played for Bristol City, Cheltenham, Exeter City, Bath City, Northampton Town and Yeovil Town.

After retiring from playing Alex has been U21 manager at Bristol City, assistant manager at Tranmere Rovers and Chief Scout at Oldham Athletic.

Alex’s father (Alex Russell) is a real club legend, having played in both of Southport’s  Football League promotion squads, in 1966-67 under Billy Bingham and 1972-73 under Jimmy Meadows. He scored the memorable goal that clinched the Fourth Division Championship, a 90th minute equaliser against Hartlepool in April 1973.
