Former Aston Villa star Alan Wright is the new manager of Southport FC. From a highly competitive short list Wright has proven to the Port Board that he is the right man to power the Port forward.
Wright has recently had experience as assistant manager at Blackpool and has coached at Bloomfield Road’s Centre for Excellence. His illustrious playing career saw him start at Blackpool before Kenny Dalglish bought him for £500,000 at Blackburn Rovers winning two England Under 21 caps. It was at Aston Villa where Wright flourished, making 320 appearances in eight years, justifying many times over his £1 million transfer. Only Gordon Cowans and Dennis Mortimer have played more times for Villa in Europe with Wright making 26 appearances. Wright also was included in five full England squads gaining two Under 21 caps.
Wright comes into the Merseyrail Community Stadium with a good grounding in the non league scene, having had a spell at Northwich Victoria during severe financial issues and, at the other extreme, as a player and coach under Micky Mellon at Fleetwood Town.
Alan Wright on his Southport appointment said “I am very enthusiastic about going into management. Southport Football Club has real potential and we will go forward together. As a player I had to be ultra determined and I will be the same as a manager. I believe in playing good football, on the ground and I really relish the opportunity to organise the club. I will be looking to blend what we already have with new signings. I enjoy coaching, scouting and youth development. I have plenty of contacts and have started on those already. I am looking forward to meeting up with our supporters and providing success on the pitch. The Football Conference is a very testing, competitive league and I have the ambition for us to be at the top end of the table. I am bringing in John Hills as my number two. John is vastly experienced having had three spells at Blackpool along with a playing career at Everton, Sheffield Wednesday and Gillingham. He is a top class coach and knows the non league scene via AFC Fylde and Fleetwood. I can’t wait for the season to start!””
Chairman Charlie Clapham said “ Alan is a tremendous appointment for the club. Alan with his Premier League background at Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers is a competitor and winner, qualities he will bring into the dressing room. Alan as a UEFA A coach knows we have a number of potentially high quality players who require coaching and nurturing. Alan will have the scope to strengthen the squad and we can all look forward to being very competitive in the Football Conference. Alan will add his profile to the club on and off the pitch. I believe these are very exciting times for the club.”
