We are deeply saddened to learn this morning of the passing of Alex Russell, perhaps the greatest player ever to play for Southport Football Club, aged 78.
One of the first players we inducted into the Southport FC Hall of Fame, to say he was a crowd favourite would be the understatement of the century. Making his debut in 1963 and his final appearance in 1975, Alex is famously remembered for scoring the goal that clinched the Fourth Division championship in 1973 v Hartlepool.
With 348 League appearances (and nearly 400 in total) and 75 goals to his name, Alex is a household name in the town and after retiring from playing worked in a local printing firm (at one time producing the Southport programme!).
We understand that Alex sadly passed away yesterday evening and we send all our love to his family at this very sad time.
Condolences to the Russell family
