CARLISLE U. v SOUTHPORT C.

Weekly Dispatch (London)

30/11/1913

This Cup-tie, played at Carlisle, attracted 5,000 spectators. Carlisle were the first to press, and after the Southport goal had had several narrow escapes Mills beat the Lancastrians’ goalkeeper after twenty-five minutes’ play. The game continued fast and exciting and both goalkeepers had plenty to do to keep off attacks. Towards the interval Southport made desperate attempts to equalise, and Stringfellow beat Smith with a fine shot. Half score: Carlisle, 1; Southport, 1.

On resuming Southport immediately attacked, but Smith cleared. Carlisle retaliated, but only to see the ball go past. The visitors were now having slightly the best of matters, but Routledge and McGough were playing well at half-back, with the result that Southport’s attacks were repulsed. Carlisle retaliated again, and from a centre by Sanderson Cockburn put Carlisle in front immediately. Carlisle were very unlucky, Mills scoring again, but the referee disallowed the point for hands.

Result: CARLISLE UNITED … 2
SOUTHPORT CENTRAL … 1
