On this day in 1967, newly promoted Southport travelled to Watford in the Third Division. Watford had been unbeaten at home since the opening day of the season (10 games without defeat) and were widely tipped for promotion having been pipped at the post by Middlesborough the previous season. At Southport they were on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline and this game therefore represented a chance for the Sandgrounders to clinch their second “double” of the season.
