On This Day: February 5th

On this day in 1994 Welling United were the visitors to Haig Avenue in our first season in the GM Vauxhall Conference.

It was at Welling United in September that Southport broke through the psychological barrier of a first Conference victory to signal the start of a sequence of eight wins in nine games.

The Sandgrounders were looking to renew their leadership challenge after being cruelly denied top spot at Halifax in midweek. Having led 2-1 into injury time they were pegged back by a dramatic late equaliser. They had been top for 37 seconds!

With a clean bill of health Kettle had every man to choose from despite missing out on the transfer of striker Andy Whittaker.
