Southport FC Former Players Association (Port Online)

On This Day: January 1st

On this day in 1954, Southport welcome Barnsley to Haig Avenue for the first time in 16 years. Barnsley were not to be underestimated with three wins and four draws on their travels, but the largely settled Southport side made short work of them. Jack Billingham shook off a painful jaw injury received at Bradford which saw him lose three teeth to keep his place and bag two goals.
