On this day in 1962 Southport FC Coach Driver John Wilkinson was struck in the eye with a stone as he went to collect the team coach at Prenton Park after an exciting Liverpool Senior Cup Semi-Final tie with Tranmere Rovers.
The excitement of the night’s 3-3 draw after extra time had seen a highly contested game marred with off-field incidents.
The incentive for the winners was a money spinning tie with either Liverpool or Everton and with Southport undefeated in their last five games they were confident of returning to Haig Avenue with a win.
