On this day in 1938, Southport hosted Manchester United at Haig Avenue in the Lancashire Senior Cup Final. It was Southport’s first appearance in the final for 34 years and had it not been for an injury to goalkeeper Joe Rutherford, who’s concussion kept him in the infirmary for a fortnight following the game, things may have been different. Harold Hampson deputised in goal.
