Player Profile: Tom Finley

After Southport had suffered four consecutive defeats he was signed by Wally Fielding and went straight into the first team. The side was undefeated in his first five games but not so successful in his last League game — a 5—1 hammering at Crewe Alexandra. He was freed at the end of the season. He had been in the Army, serving in Korea and Japan as a physical training instructor, and was signed by Bill Shankly as a part-time professional at Workington. Subsequently signing full-time,his best campaign was 1958—59 when he made 30 of his 82 League appearances. During his spell at Haig Avenue he trained at Workington, travelling through for matches. In recent years he has been employed in the building trade.
