Haydn Barker, a pupil of Leigh Grammar School, first played half a season in Southport\'s \'A\' team in 1953 and after a spell with Blackpool he later re-joined Southport. He was an industrious inside-forward with the ability to burst through. Unfortunately his foraging and approach play was not matched by his finishing although he did score after only 14 seconds at Hartlepools (successfully reproducing the goal Crystal Palace had scored against Southport 2 days earlier!) to give Southport their first away point in 16 games. He turned part-time professional during his second spell at Haig Avenue having completed his training as a mining engineer and latterly was a regular in the forward line. He was one of Ray Minshull\'s many ex-Southport signings at the newly-formed Wigan Rovers and scored in their very first match � a 4-1 win over Congleton watched by 5,174 spectators. After only 6 games a broken leg effectively ended his professional career although he did play for his local team Astley Labour Club until around 1968. He still lives in Tyldesley and now runs his own diamond drilling firm in Warrington.
