From Sunderland boys, Norman a right-winger, joined Ferryhill Athletic in close season 1928 and moved to Eden Colliery four seasons later. In 1935 he had a trial with Sheffield Wednesday and in October 1935, he signed for Hull City and whilst with the Tigers he had a spell back with Ferryhill on loan.
He made a scoring League debut for Hull in February 1936 in the 1-3 home defeat to Barnsley. It was his only strike in 4 appearances for Hull as Hull finished bottom of the 2nd Division that season.
In July 1936 he moved to Southport and scored 13 goals in 58 League appearances for them, including a hat-trick against Tranmere in a 3-3 After he retired, he settled in Northamptonshire.
