John was with Liverpool as a youngster before he joined Southport and made his debut as a sub as a 16 year old on 31 March 1979 against South Liverpool. John�s full debut came in the 2-0 home defeat to Gateshead in the penultimate game of the 78/79 season. The following season saw John make 29 full appearances followed up by 37 and a goal in 1980/81, the goal was one of three league goals he scored for the club, the others coming in 1981/82 when he played a further 28 games. The 1982/83 season saw John make 23 full appearances with 4 as sub. He describes making his debut as a 16 year old as the highlight of his time at the club. Kenny Spencer was at the club then and had tried to push a youth set up at the club and John was given his chance which he took with both hands. John was disappointed with the way he was released from the club when he was advised by letter that he wouldn�t be getting a new contract without any warning. Not wanting a contract and just wanting to play football it took him by surprise and left him feeling let down by the club he had served so well for 118 league games. On leaving the club John played for South Liverpool and Warrington. Living in Burscough, he is heavily involved with Maghull Football Club where he is now on the committee having had a stint as manager. A non paying club John looks at the wages some clubs are paying and wonders how they can possibly survive. Even in the West Cheshire League clubs are paying lads to play which gets out of hand. Away from football John has worked for an engineering company all his life.
