Our research into the history of Southport Football Club stems from our aim to to help supporters new and old to recognise the contribution each and every player, manager, coach or official has made to the club, town and community.
The Southport newspaper archives (Journal, Visiter, Guardian) have not yet been digitised meaning that we have been unable to access them during “lockdown” but a huge amount of work has been undertaken to research as many incomplete/missing line-ups/goalscorers as possible from other local and national sources available via the British Newspaper Archives.
During “lockdown” large updates have been made covering hundreds and hundreds of games across both war periods, Welsh Cup (yes we did enter it once upon a time!), Lancashire & Liverpool senior cups and many other competitions.
We have added a new research section to the website (under “Other” on the menu) which lists the games where we still have line-ups or goalscorers missing. These pages will be updated frequently as and when new discoveries are made.
We would like to appeal for help from any supporters who may have kept diaries or scrapbooks that might have covered some of the “missing” games over the years. If you have any information that may help with our research into these games please get in touch.
At the same time we have been trying to trace missing information about a number of former players, whether it’s missing dates of birth, places of birth or unfortunately details of their passing. We hope that via this line of research we can re-establish contact with a number of these players and increase our membership which is open to any player who has played at least 1 game for the first team.
Up the Port!
