Southport FC Former Players Association (Port Online)

The scenes hitting our tv screens from Ukraine seem to get worse every day and the impact of the atrocities will be felt for years to come. Over 400,000 refugees have already fled their war-torn homes to neighbouring Poland, home of our retro shirt partners World Retro (a Chablais Sport brand), who have been working incredibly hard alongside the Polish people to support them.

Many different agencies have stepped up to help feed and clothe the incoming refugee population, and it seems that all of Poland is geared to doing what they can. Paul Jago, chairman of World Retro, and his team have worked hard to address the issue of transportation for those eligible to come to the UK, devising a plan to move them from the Ukrainian border to a Polish airport, working with airline Wizz Air to provide seats to fly them to the UK, and then for the new arrivals to be greeted and taken to new homes over here. All of this work is done by volunteers and provided free other than the relatively modest cost of the flight that Paul and his team have been able to negotiate…and this is where we come in.

In working with World Retro, we have designed a unique scarf which is now available to purchase for £20. This money is being used to fund the cost of bringing one refugee to safe passage in the UK. For EVERY scarf purchased you are helping to bring ONE person to a place of safety away from the horrors of the war that is ravaging through their country.

We know that many of you are already playing your part to help in other ways, but our wish is that in creating this facility we are doing something for our football family to show their support to do something which will meet a very real need and at the same time demonstrate our care for all those who are suffering so terribly.

We hope to soon see many of these scarves being proudly worn at Haig Avenue. So please, if you can, purchase a scarf and show your support.

UK Homes for Ukraine

Some of you may also feel you are able to do more and today, Friday 18th March, also sees the launch of the UK Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme. Individuals, charities, community groups and businesses can now record their interest in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war – including those with no family ties to the UK.

People wanting to be sponsors who do not know anyone personally fleeing Ukraine can record their interest in being a sponsor.

For full details of the scheme and/or to register your interest please visit the following government advice page:

Alternatively World Retro are happy to hear directly from supporters paul@chablais-group.ch
