Southport Football Club, who had been in existence for some seasons (see 1872 – 1881 – The Rugby Years), arranged rugby fixtures for 1881-82. After some heavy defeats, the last known being on 29th October when fielding two men short, Southport lost to Bootle by one goal, eight tries and eleven minor points, the club switched to association football.
On 12th November, Southport played Bootle ‘second’ in their first match under Association Rules.

Christ Church / Southport Recreation

In 1887 Southport Recreation amalgamated with Southport Football Club. For a number of years they had operated as an independent club. Originally founded as Christ Church, in the summer of 1886 they changed their name to Southport Recreation. They often competed against Southport Football Club, Southport Wanderers, and Southport Old Boys.

We are currently undertaking research into the early years of this club, in order to enrich our understanding of why a decision was made to amalgamate with Southport Football Club.

Southport Old Boys

This club amalgamated with Southport Central in 1890, with the majority of the players forming the newly renamed reserve string, Southport Central Old Boys. Prior to this they were an independent club and often competed against Southport Football Club, Southport Wanderers and Christ Church/Southport Recreation.

We are currently undertaking research into the early years of this club, in order to enrich our understanding of why a decision was made to amalgamate with Southport Football Club.
