Jack AshJack Ash only played 2 F.L. games in his first 2 seasons at Accrington but was a prominent member of Stanley\'s Reserves which finished runners-up in the Lancashire Combination in 1936-37. He got into the first team in November 193 7 and made 25 consecutive appearances. At �400 he was, at the time, Southport\'s most expensive acquisition but he got few chances to show his prowess because of the consistency of Dave Hill and, as a result, 36 of his 4o league matches were in the Lancashire Combination. Transfer-listed at the end of 1938-39 Jack returned for a �200 fee to Stanley, where his career ended following a broken leg in an F.A. Cup-tie against Chorley in November 1945. An engineer by trade, he was a foreman at an Accrington engineering works until his retirement in 1976. He lives near to the old Peel Park ground and, now well into his eighties, still keeps very fit by bowling in the summer.
