Club Website, Sep 5, 2020

Southport came away from The Weaver Stadium with a somewhat fortuitous 2-1 win in a game low on quality but high on endeavour from both sides.

A double from David Morgan ensured Southport gained their sixth win out of the nine pre-season games played so far, scoring 27 goals in the process.

A scrappy opening 20 minutes set the tone of the game before Nantwich took the lead on 23 minutes through Callum Saunders who slipped the ball under Tony McMillan’s body after hesitancy in the Southport defence.

Southport equalised through a Morgan penalty on 33 minutes after a handball in the box.

A niggly period ensued with neither side able to gain control.

The start of the second period was dominated by Nantwich and it took three brilliant saves in close succession by the evergreen Tony McMillan to keep the scores level.

The winning goal came out of the blue when in the 69th minute Morgan shot from 40 yards out straight at the ‘keeper who fumbled the ball over his head and into the goal.

The chances continued to be sparse at both ends as the game petered out and Southport saw the game out quite comfortably.

Not the best of games but as Liam commented after the game “it wasn’t the best game was it but we won and looked solid at the back and you can take positives from the way we played against a good Nantwich side”

Southport are back in action on Tuesday night with a short trip to Bamber Bridge, a game that is all ticket
