GOAL ELEMENTARY FOR ACE WATSON

The Non-League Football Paper

STAR MAN: Niall Watson (Southport) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★

NIALL WATSON’S first-half goal was the difference as Southport won a first league game in six. Southport opened the scoring just after the quarter-hour when Watson powered home a header from point-blank range from Tyler Walton’s inviting cross. Leamington had chances to level as Simeon Maye drove a low shot narrowly wide five minutes after the opener before Jack Edwards sent a volley over. Leamington’s woes were deepened further when their top goalscorer so far this season, Dan Turner, was forced off through a foot injury ten minutes into the second half. However, Turner was able to put weight on to his foot as he left the pitch in a positive sign for Brakes fans. Marcus Carver had a perfect chance to double Southport’s lead on his return to the club after spells at Hartlepool United and Scunthorpe United. Bursting in behind the Leamington defence in the 58th minute, the striker snatched at the chance to score his first league goal since leaving the Sandgrounders in January of this year, firing the ball directly into the face of Callum Hawkins. But Leamington failed to make Southport pay for their wasted chances as the hosts marched to a 1-0 win without much to trouble Cam Mason in t

heir net.
