Southport lifted their first trophy in four years on This day in 1997 when they disposed of Accrington Stanley in the ATS Challenge Trophy Final (Lancashire Junior Cup) at Deepdale.

Brian Butler returned after a months lay-off to captain the side, whilst Dave Rodgers served a once match suspension.

David Gamble opened the scoring in the 10th minute, with Andy Whittaker notching his 33rd goal of the season in the 35th minute, direct from a corner. Phil Horner completed the goalscoring in the second half.
