On This Day: April 2nd

Southport lifted the Lancashire Junior Cup for the sixth time on this day in 2008 at Leyland. It was the second time the trophy had been lifted by the Sandgrounders in 3 years.

Tony Gray, in the middle of a run of scoring in eight consecutive league games, put Southport ahead on 18 minutes when he converted a Mark duffy corner.

Chorley equalised within 5 minutes but on the stroke of half time Michael Powell put the Sandgrounders back in front with a first time strike after a 30 yard pass from Duffy.

Duffy made his third assist of the night almost immediately after the re-start, Tony Gray rounding the keeper to bag his second of the night.

Duffy then got on the score sheet himself with a Penalty after Chris Holland had been brought down in the area.

It was the first trophy that skipper Chris Holland had lifted in his 17 year career as a professional
