In 1991 Southport took a giant step towards a final at Manchester City’s Maine Road ground with a 4-1 semi final first leg victory over Bangor City in the Northern Premier League Cup.
Steve Whitehall’s two goals, added to goals from Holden and Smith gave Bangor a mountain to climb in the second leg.
Manager Brian Kettle had been forced to shuffle the pack with Iain Baines and John Bishop both sidelined through injury and with striker Tony Livens cup-tied against his former club. Kevin Mooney returned to the side following suspension.
