On this day in 1910, Southport progress in the FA Cup thanks to a home win over Darwen. Two regrettable incidents marred the game.
Mr Walter Knowles, president of the Darwen Club had been acting as linesman to referee, Mr Ashworth of Preston, when he was ordered off for the manner in which he protested the non-award of a penalty for an alleged trip.
the Darwen outside-left was brought down in the penalty area by Rose. Mr. Knowles considered he had been tripped and waved vigorously for a penalty. The referee ignores this and allowed the game to continue. Mr Knowles walked onto the field and excitedly insisted that the penalty should be awarded. Mr Ashworth ordered him off the field amid cries of ‘Send him off’ from the spectators.
In the final minutes goalscorer Ernest Jones was also carried off with a fractured right leg.
